Mowers

(FAQs): Mowers

What are the different types of mowers?

There are two main types of mowers: Rotary and Flail. A rotary mower uses long blades that spin horizontally to cut fine grass and brush. A flail mower uses a rotating horizontal drum (also called a tube, rotor, or axle) equipped with multiple small flails (or blades that look like a T or a Y). As the drum spins, the flails swing freely to chop and shred heavy grass and brush that would be too much for most rotary mowers. As a general rule, rotary mowers are better for manicured lawns and general grassy areas, while flail mowers are better for overgrown and brushy areas.

What options are there for mounting a mower?

Mowers come with a variety of attachment options for mounting on tractors, skid steers, ATVs, and UTVs. Most tractors have a place to add a 3-point hitch to the rear. Once the hitch is attached, you can mount a variety of implements — including a flail mower, rotary mower, ditch bank mower, or tiller (to name a few). With the Quick Tach System on most skid steers, you can mount a variety of implements on the front of the loader lift arms. This includes many of the same options that are available for tractors: flail mowers, finish mowers, and tillers. For ATVs and UTVs, mounting a mower typically consists of adding a tow-behind option (flail or rotary) onto the rear hitch of the vehicle.

What are the benefits of using a mower attachment?

Versatility: Adding a mower attachment to a tractor, skid steer, ATV, or UTV means you don’t have to purchase a separate implement (a dedicated lawn mower) to get the job done. That also means you get more use out of the machines you already have. Affordability: The cost of adding a mower attachment to a piece of equipment you already own is typically less than purchasing an entirely new implement just to cut grass. Flexibility: Tractor, skid steer, ATV, and UTV mowers come in a variety of sizes and types so you can mix and match according to the job at hand. And you can use the same machine — your skid steer, for example — to cut manicured grass, tall grass, overgrowth, and brush just by changing the attachment.

What size mower do I need?

Mowers come in a variety of sizes and types, so it can be tricky picking the one that’s right for the job at hand. When choosing a mower, consider: The implement’s lifting or towing capacity, the size and weight of the mower you want to use, and your intended use. If you’re not sure what size would work best for your specific task, talk to an implement dealer or attachment dealer for more guidance.

How do I use a tractor, atv, or utv mower?

For a tractor mower, attach the cutting unit to the 3-point hitch on the back of your tractor. Next, hook the tractor’s power take-off (PTO) to the mower’s PTO rotor shaft. Ensure that all connections are solid before you start mowing. For a skid steer mower, use the Quick Tach System to mount the mower on the lift arms of the implement. Ensure that all connections are solid before you start mowing. For an ATV or UTV mower, attach the tow-behind unit to the rear hitch of the implement. Ensure that all connections are solid, power up the engine on the mower unit, and then start mowing.

What safety precautions should I take when using a mower?

Like with any implement, you’ll want to take the proper safety precautions when using your mower: Wear proper clothing (i.e., long pants, long sleeves, work boots or shoes). Wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including work gloves, hearing protection, and safety glasses. Avoid distractions. Keep children and pets away from the mowing area. Never take on passengers. Be mindful of debris that the mower might kick up and where it might go. Avoid mowing across a slope so the implement doesn’t tip over. Never leave the implement unattended while it is running. Disconnect the implement from its power source before touching the underside of the mower. Regularly inspect and maintain the mower to ensure that it’s in safe working condition
