WHAT ARE SKID STEER AUGERS AND WHAT ARE THEY USED FOR?

Skid steer augers and auger drill bits are powerful and versatile implements that attach to the lift arm of the skid steer and allow you to perform a variety of difficult tasks, including: Digging holes for posts (e.g., fence posts, utility poles, signposts, etc.), Planting trees and shrubs, Testing soil conditions, Installing utilities (e.g., electrical lines and plumbing pipes), Drilling ice fishing holes, The term “skid steer auger” refers to the entire unit — the frame, bracket, planetary drive, auger bit, and any extensions you add — while the term “auger drill bit” refers specifically to the cutting teeth that do the actual digging.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF AUGER DRILL BITS?

There are many different types of auger drill bits, each designed to do different jobs. The most common include: Standard, Rock, Tree planting, Post hole, Standard auger drill bits are the most versatile and can be used for a variety of jobs in different soils. Rock auger drill bits are made from stronger material (e.g., carbide) and drill through compacted soil, rock, and asphalt. Tree planting auger drill bits are typically wider than other bits and designed to dig a clean, round hole to accommodate various sizes of root ball. Post-hole auger drill bits have a smaller diameter to dig holes that accommodate different size posts.

WHAT SIZE AUGER DRILL BIT SHOULD I USE?

You’ll want to choose auger drill bit size based on the type of job you’re doing and the size of the hole you need. For example, if you’re digging holes for 4” x 4” fence posts, you’ll need an auger drill bit with a diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the posts. A 6-inch auger works well in this case, but you may want a 9-inch or 12-inch auger to make room for more concrete. If you’re unsure what size auger drill bit you should use on a certain job, consult with a professional.

HOW DO I USE A SKID STEER AUGER?

First, attach the frame to the lift arms of the skid steer. The frame also includes a bracket to which you’ll attach the drive unit. Next, attach the planetary drive unit to the bracket. In most cases, the frame and planetary drive unit will come as one unit. But , at times, you may have to separate the two pieces for maintenance or repair. Next, connect the hydraulic lines between the drive unit and the skid steer, and attach the auger drill bit. Once the auger is attached, position the skid steer over the spot where you want to dig, engage the auger drive, and lower the bit into the ground.

HOW DEEP CAN A SKID STEER AUGER DRILL?

The depth that a skid steer auger can reach depends on a variety of factors, including: The size of the auger itself, The power of the skid steer, The power of the drive unit, The soil conditions, The number of extensions you add. Most skid steer augers can drill down six to eight feet — more than enough for most farm, home, and DIY applications. With the right equipment, some skid steer augers can drill down 20 feet or more.

WHAT SAFETY PRECAUTIONS SHOULD I TAKE WHEN USING A SKID STEER AUGER?

When using a skid steer auger to dig holes, take the following safety precautions: Always wear gloves, hearing protection, and safety glasses, Make sure the skid steer is parked on level ground, Make sure the parking brake is engaged, Lower the auger drill bit to the ground before engaging the auger drive, Do not overload the auger (i.e., use too much force to push the auger further into the ground), Never leave the skid steer unattended while the auger drill bit is turning, Be aware of your surroundings while operating the skid steer.
